Maybe to protect against a “super league”?

… if Alabama, Georgia, usc, Michigan, Ohio state, Texas, penn state, Oregon, Clemson, Notre dame, Oklahoma, and maybe a few others get greedy and think they can try for a national “super” league, like the big euro soccer teams try to do every once in a while.
